The Mystical Poetry of Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes
By Yvonne Seng
America’s best-selling poet is a 13th-century Persian mystic from Konya, Turkey: Mevlana Rumi. “It is my love which enhances my whole existence,” he wrote. His poetry accompanied a striking spiritual devotion – a harmonious blend of verse, song, dance and music that encouraged a controlled ecstasy. His work inspired the Mevlevi Sufi order, more commonly known today as the Whirling Dervishes. The class will use audio-visual materials to explore the historical background, poetry, beliefs and music associated with Rumi, the sublime master of love poetry. Yvonne Seng was born in Australia; Yvonne has traveled and worked widely in the Middle East. The first non-Muslim woman allowed in the religious law archives of Istanbul, she researched the lives of 16th-century women in the time of Suleyman the Magnificent for her doctoral dissertation at the University of Chicago. She has worked as an archaeologist and a professor of Islamic Studies in Washington D.C. and Princeton, and interviewed religious leaders and mystics for her book Men in Black Dresses: A Quest for the Future Among Wisdom Makers of the Middle East. Yvonne has written widely on the history and culture of the Middle East, was a speaker at the State of the World Forum in 2000, and named "a force for positive turbulence," by the Center for Creative Leadership. She lives in Missoula with her husband Rich Bechtel, a UM alumnus. |

Jon Jackson has written 11 novels that have been published. He has written articles on a wide variety of topics ranging from food, to golf, to fishing, and even including literature. In this event, Professor Gary W. Hawk will present ideas on the value of forgiveness on the cusp of the New Year. His presentation will be based on his experience teaching forgiveness and reconciliation for twelve years at The University of Montana. After introducing a helpful theoretical framework, Professor Hawk would like to engage the audience in a conversation about forgiveness. Together we might explore topics such as: Who benefits from forgiveness? Is forgiveness a decision or a process? How does power affect forgiveness? Why is it crucial to distinguish between forgiveness and reconciliation? What stories can the community tell about forgiveness, its effect on relationships, and its possible outcome in reconciliation? Gary W. Hawk is an adjunct assistant professor in the Davidson Honors College where he teaches Ways of Knowing, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation, and other courses. He has taught MOLLI courses two previous years. He is an amateur poet and fine woodworker. When not teaching he can sometimes be found in his sea Kayak.

Mudslide Charley
MySpace
MudSlide Charley plays the blues, carving out an original sound from the rich, fertile dirt of the Mississippi Delta. How specifically this nefarious muse came to bane our existence in the Rocky Mountain West is anybody's guess. MudSlide Charley speaks with raw conviction and gutbucket bravado to tell the story of our lives. This music we play, at times, may not be pretty, but sewn in the fabric of our rough hewn costume resides magic, emotion, truth and momentary salvation.

Make your own Parfleche--the "Indian Suitcase"
This family-friendly program invites participants to explore a tradition of form and function that has been widespread among Native American tribes of the Great Plains, Rocky Mountain, and Northwest Plateau regions for at least 300 years.
